Acupuncture is an excellent complement to any other weight control strategy. Since 1985 the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association’s (NADA) 5 Needle protocol has been used in hospitals, prisons, acupuncture clinics and drug rehab programs to treat drug addiction pharmaceutical intervention.
This versatile set of points have been employed by the group Acupuncturists Without Borders in the palliative treatment of disaster victims since Hurricane Katrina. First responders and soldiers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder have also benefited from ear acupuncture treatment.
A similar set of points on the external ear may be used to reduce food cravings and stress which can result in binge eating. These points may also optimize organ and endocrine function: boosting metabolism and improving digestion and elimination.
Several body points located below the elbows and knees enhance the overall effect of the treatment. Dr. Oz’s website, www.doctoroz.com pointed to research supporting acupuncture’s ability to influence the obesity hormones ghrelin and leptin.
Weight loss acupuncture treatments are nicely suited to the Community Acupuncture model and are most effective if taken as a 10 treatment course over a period of several weeks.
