herbal medicineHerbal Medicine In Chinese Medicine, herbal formulas are used to facilitate the body’s own restorative processes.

Joe is trained in the science of herbal medicine and a pharmacopoeia that consists of about 500 Chinese herbs. Chinese herbal formulas contain combinations of roots, seeds, grains, flowers, berries, fruit, bark, leaves, stems, shells, nuts, resin, or seaweed.

The goal of Chinese herbal medicine is to treat the root of a problem, rather than simply medicating its symptoms. In so doing, the patient’s body is stimulated to heal itself.  During an herbal consultation, Joe will administer and review a comprehensive medical intake and talk with you about your health concerns.  He will examine your tongue and take your pulse which will help him select a formula most appropriate to your condition.

Chinese Herbal formulas were traditionally administered in the form of a decoction where dried herbs were simmered until a concentrated liquid was formed, or powdered herbs were mixed with honey and rolled into balls.  In modern clinics, formulas often come as powdered or granulated extracts which may be encapsulated. Chinese herbal formulas are gentle and work over time.  For a chronic condition, a patient may need to be treated for a period of three months or longer.

If appropriate, a personalized formula will be made for you.
